What Does My Dream Mean? I Woke Up Clutching the Covers…
A dreamer recently asked: “What does it mean to dream of all of the windows of your house being GONE. The window panes weren’t broken in my dream – they were simply missing. There were curtains hanging on the windows, blowing in the wind but no glass in the windows. It was cold outside in my dream, so I was freezing. I tried to put blankets over the windows, but they blew away. Nothing I tried worked. I woke up literally clutching my bedspread. Thanks! – Anne B.”
Cool dream, excuse the pun! The interpretation for a dream such as this one can actually go one of two ways. When it comes to analyzing someone else’s dreams, that’s often the case. Because the dream analyst didn’t experience the dream personally and they aren’t privy to a lot of personal details about the dreamer’s life, they sometimes can break it down into several possibilities – leaving the dreamer(s) to choose the one that’s most relevant.
When I read the dream, my first reaction was the word “EXPOSED.” A dream such as this would indicate that the dreamer possibly had something exposed about themselves recently – maybe something they’d done, feelings they have, something they said, etc. The windows being open PLUS the blankets not staying in place seem to back up this interpretation. Furthermore, it would indicate that perhaps the dreamer had tried to “cover something up” and it wasn’t successful.
The dream could indicate that the dreamer either has been exposed or fears being exposed.
The fact that the dreamer mentions being “cold” is very important here. It would suggest regret and feelings of guilt. These would, of course, go along with the entire concept of having something exposed.
Another possible analysis for this dream is simply frustration. Any time we are frustrated in our “real life,” the frustration almost always plays out in our dreams. We will encounter things (in our dreams) that seem to be against us and will fight against things that seem to constantly get the better of us! The cold air and blowing blankets would certainly qualify as frustrating foes in the dream above. It’s entirely possibly (very, very possible in fact) that the dreamer was cold in real life and transferred the physical feeling into her dream.
The subconscious brain could have said, “It’s cold… the windows must be open!”
Only the dreamer, herself, can know for sure which interpretation would fit her own personal situation. Given the fact that she was clutching her bedspread when she woke up leads me to believe it’s probably the second one.
Thanks for submitting your dream Anne B!
I want to thank everyone who submits their dreams for interpretation. By doing so, you allow other dreamers to gain insight into their own dreams. I hope you’ll continue to submit your dreams again and again! However, there’s been a little change in the way I’ll be analyzing dreams. Please only submit your dreams through e-mail or the contact form if they’re PRIVATE. If the dreams you want interpreted and analyzed can be shared with others (which is always fun – and a great way to learn about the meanings of dreams!), leave your dream as a comment – either on the last article on the website or on a dream interpretation that’s in the same ballpark.
Thanks! – Joi
What Does It Mean to Dream About a Tree?
Tree Dreams Often Symbolize Life…
A recent reader recently asked for a dream interpretation and dream analysis of a very “vivid” dream.
I recently had a dream about trees. Trees were the main part of the dream that I can remember. They were surrounding me. The bright and beautiful colors of green are the thing I remember the most. I did see the sky and trunks of the trees, too – so browns and blue were also in my dream.
I felt so peaceful in my dream. I can’t even describe how cool this dream was. Everything was right in the world for me in my dream. It was just me and a lot of trees. I kept looking up at them and even thought how they looked like they were touching the sky. Does this seem like a strange dream to you? What does it mean? – Megan
First of all, the dream doesn’t seem at all strange to me – it seems perfectly wonderful! Trees are often symbolic of LIFE in our dreams. While there are exceptions, I believe that your dream is a classic example of this interpretation.
The fact that you “looked up” and noted that they “looked like they were touching the sky” are great news for your dream analysis. This indicates that you believe that things in your life are “looking up.” So much so that, in your heart, you believe that “the sky’s the limit!”
This is a very positive dream and you should feel 100 percent good about its meaning. This dream indicates that you are in a very good place in your life right now and feel very hopeful for the future.
Very often, green in dreams is symbolic of jealousy or envy – but, when the context is a positive one (without any hints of negativity), green symbolizes peace, contentment, and total freedom from doubt and worry.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful dream, Megan, and I hope you have many more just like it!
Dream Analysis: What Does it Mean to Dream Of Packing a Suitcase?!
Suitcase dreams, or dreaming about packing, have more than one dream interpretation or meaning. Remember, when a dream symbol or dream topic has different meanings, you have to look at all of the circumstances in the dream, including your emotions during the dream and immediately after waking. Also, examine what’s going on in your real life. It’s sort of like unraveling a mystery, which is always fun!
Also remember that packing anything (trunk, suitcase, bag..) carries the same interpretations.
Possible Dream Interpretation #1
Packing a suitcase in a dream, or even just dreaming about a suitcase or carrying bag can imply an intense need to get away. There is a situation or even a person that you want to pack up your life and run away from. If this is the dream analysis for you, your emotions in the dream will probably be anxious. You may be excited and happy (at the though of escaping something undesirable).
Possible Dream Interpretation #2
You may be looking forward to (or even a little intimidated by) beginning a new chapter in your life. Many times when we are starting school, moving into a new house, or starting a new job, our emotions carry over into our dreams. Suitcase and packing dreams are common while we are going through changes in our life. The dream symbolism is that you’re moving into a new part of your life.
If, during the dream, you encounter problems (such as the suitcase won’t close, you are having to pack in a hurry, you can’t find something, etc), it’s a sign that you are apprehensive and maybe even a little insecure about these changes.
Possible Dream Interpretation #3
You may need a vacation! You have probably said, or at least thought, (in the past few weeks) that you need a vacation. Suitcase/packing dreams are your brains way of saying, “Yes, you really do!”
Only the dreamer knows for certain which dream analysis is his or hers. Remember to closely examine your emotions during the dream, when you wake up, and even now – as you remember the dream. These emotions tie into the dream analysis in a MAJOR way.
Dream Analysis: What Do Flood Dreams Mean?
The dream interpretation (or dream analysis) for flood dreams is pretty cut and dry. The symbolism of the flood waters and the feelings the dreamer experiences during, and after, the dream represent circumstances and situations in the dreamer’s real world.
Floods, and other natural disasters (such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes) represent UNCONTROLLABLE forces that are POWERFUL, and very often leave their victims utterly helpless. It’s these feelings that the dream, itself, represents.
If you dream about a flood, more likely than not you have recently felt overwhelmed in your life by something (or someone) that seemed like an uncontrollable force – one which left you feeling somewhat helpless, at their mercy, and victimized.
Think about the word flood for a minute. We talk about floods of emotion, floods of tears, floods of rain – each time we’re referring to something that seems endless and out of control. The floods in a dream represent something in our daily life that seems out of control, relentless, and overwhelming. A flood dream is almost always symbolic of something negative in our lives that we want to address but haven’t yet found a way to do so. I say almost always because there is an exception.
More than likely, if you have a flood dream, your emotions will be anywhere from frightened to extremely anxious. However, if your emotion could be described as calm, amused, or even relieved, your dream analysis is different from the one discussed above. If you have a positive emotion during your flood dream, your dream is symbolic of relief. This could mean that something WAS overwhelming, but you found a way to handle the situation and come out on top. Your dream could be a celebration of this triumph.
If you feel relief during the dream, it could mean that you have bottled-up (or “dammed up”) emotions that you want to release. Your subconscious mind is letting you know what a relief it will be when you release these emotions and sort of let the flood gates open!
Finally, ask yourself if the dream seemed to be more about the flood, itself, or the “washing away” of homes, cars, etc. If the dream seems to be more symbolic of “washing away,” you could either be looking to make changes in your life OR you could be afraid of unwanted changes washing over your life. Again, the emotions you feel in the dream will clue you in on whether this is a positive dream or a negative dream
Prophetic Dreams: When Dreams Seem to Come True
Prophetic, or precognitive, dreams are dreams which seem to come true. There are almost always explanations for these dreams and I thought it’d be a good time to take a look at a few. While dreams cannot accurately tell the future, at times they do seem to.
In fact, I hear from people every now and then who want to know what it means when dreams DO seem to come true. Below is a sample e-mail:
I know that common sense says that dreams don’t tell the future. I’ve read on your website many times that dreams aren’t prophetic and they don’t tell the future. My brain knows that BUT there have been a lot of times when I dream something and it pretty much comes true.. Maybe not exactly true, but close. Know what I mean?
Like the most recent time this happened. I dreamed that my husband and I had a huge fight over me being friends with my ex husband. In the dream, he yelled and I left the house to go to my mom’s house for the night. About a week later, the huge fight happened. It was because of my friendship with my ex, just like in the dream. I know my husband hates for me to be friends with my ex or to meet him for lunch. The fight was over a lunch we’d had. When I stormed out and got in the car, I thought, “This is just how it happened in my dream.” Can dreams really tell the future? – Chicago Dreamer
This dream is a perfect example of why dreams may seem to be prophetic. First of all, remind yourself that it is YOU who creates the dream, in your subconscious mind. Many times, if you behave in a certain way in the dream, it’s because you know that’s either how you typically behave or how you would behave in that particular situation. In the example above, I’d wager to guess that leaving an argument and going to her mom’s house is the dreamer’s typical response. Therefore, she KNOWS that this is what follows an argument. Naturally, her subconscious mind would create this scenario in her dream.
But how did she know there’d be a fight? Most of the time, people know when something’s “brewing.” We usually know when we’re walking on a thin line or when someone we love is approaching such a line. If we learn to REALLY pay attention to and utilize our dream interpretations, we’ll be able to use these dreams as warnings. They give us a head’s up before something bad happens. It’s then our choice to either heed the advice or shove it to the side and take our chances.
If this dreamer had really analyzed what her dream was trying to tell her (before it was too late), maybe she could have done something to diffuse the situation and avoid the “huge” fight. She even says that she knew her husband hated what she was doing. The dream was a PERFECT time to change the course she was on.
Another dreamer told me that he dreamed he had a car wreck one month and the next month he did. What are the chances that the young man KNEW he drove too fast and/or didn’t pay attention behind the wheel? Again, dreams can be used as tools for self improvement (and in this case, self protection!). We simply have to pay closer attention to the dream before it’s too late. Again, as I said above, we know very well when something is brewing because we’re part of the brewing process.
It’s worth noting that just as some people are nicer or neater than other people, some individuals are more perceptive than other individuals. People who are keenly perceptive and very “in touch” with themselves and others around them are more apt to have these types of dreams. Perceptive people pick up on emotions, potential problems, and growing tensions easier than other people. Someone who is very tuned into the world around them is the perfect type of person to have what appear to be prophetic dreams.
These people are luckier than they probably even realize because their dreams give them the perfect opportunity to change their course and, hopefully (to an extent) alter the negative outcome.
- They can stop doing things they know make other people mad.
- They can stop doing things that hurt others.
- They can slow down when behind the wheel of a car (and certainly make sure they don’t text or drive recklessly!).
- Etc….
Can you see why I’m so excited about dream interpretation?! We can use our dreams to LITERALLY make our lives and ourselves better. Have YOU ever had a dream that seemed to come true? Did you ever have a troubling dream, then alter your actions to avoid trouble? Share in the comments!
